The Republican gubernatorial candidate is running on a platform of common sense, deregulation, and ending the state's sanctuary status.

California Republican Gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton speaks to the media at his primary night event on 2 June 2026 in Huntington Beach, California.

Steve Hilton, a former adviser to UK Prime Minister David Cameron and a Trump-endorsed candidate, is mounting a serious challenge to pull California back from the brink of collapse.

After 16 years of unchecked Democratic rule, Hilton is campaigning on a platform of common sense, arguing that the state’s tradition of innovation has been suffocated by overbearing bureaucracy, high taxes, and unsustainable living costs. Hilton’s plan is straightforward: stop the government from picking the pockets of its citizens.

He is proposing a tax-free threshold on the first $100,000 of income, aggressive deregulation, and a total war on the waste currently plaguing state government. He correctly identifies that the quickest way to put money back into the hands of Californians is for the state to stop taking it.

The candidate is also taking a firm stance on law and order, specifically targeting California’s disastrous 'sanctuary state' policies. Hilton, himself a son of immigrants, is championing the legal immigrant community while pledging to end the state's obstruction of federal immigration enforcement.

He aims to restore cooperation with federal authorities, a necessary step to re-establish the rule of law. While his Democrat opponent, Xavier Becerra, relies on tired fear-mongering about 'Trump errand boys,' Hilton is focused on the reality of a state where poverty and unemployment rates remain among the highest in the nation.

With a majority of Californians now admitting the state is heading in the wrong direction, Hilton is betting that voters are finally ready to trade failed progressive ideology for a pragmatic, pro-growth agenda.
