A nationalist movement known as Russkaya Obshina has emerged as a significant force in Russia, conducting over 900 raids since 2023 to police behavior they deem contrary to traditional Russian values.
The group, which maintains strong ties to the Russian Orthodox Church and supports the military effort in Ukraine, frequently patrols public spaces, including nightclubs, warehouses, and hostels. While the group operates without formal legal registration as a civilian patrol, their activities often involve direct coordination with local police.
In one documented instance, members raided a private birthday party in Arkhangelsk, leading to the subsequent conviction of the organizer for blasphemy due to a neon light display.
The group’s activities are wide-ranging, targeting both perceived moral failings and illegal migration, with evidence suggesting financial backing from foundations linked to prominent Russian figures.
Supporters view the group as a necessary defense against foreign cultural intrusion, while critics argue the movement’s methods of intimidation and arbitrary targeting operate outside the bounds of established law.
Despite international scrutiny, the Russian government continues to emphasize the preservation of traditional spiritual and moral values, providing a permissive environment for these nationalist efforts to flourish.
