Law enforcement in Italy has moved swiftly to apprehend two Pakistani nationals accused of a gruesome murder plot that left four migrant farm workers dead inside a burning minivan.
The suspects were identified through clear CCTV footage showing them blocking the vehicle's doors from the outside before dousing it with flammable liquid and igniting the blaze at a petrol station in Calabria.
The attack, which occurred in broad daylight, highlights the deteriorating security situation in rural areas plagued by disputes over agricultural work and housing. A fifth occupant, an Afghan national, managed to escape the inferno by shattering a window.
He reported that the violence stemmed from a confrontation over transportation fees that the victims refused to pay. The survivor also alleged that the group had been working in local strawberry fields without receiving cash wages, despite being provided with food and lodging.
