The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that a group of over 140 Venezuelan nationals were safely returned to their home country last month as part of standard immigration enforcement operations.
The agency stated that once these individuals were removed from U.S. custody, the United States government no longer retained responsibility for them. The deportees, including Abelardo Rincón and Darwin Eliecer Serrano Lopez, had been processed through the immigration system after being detained for violating U.S. law.
Following their return to Venezuela, the individuals were housed by local authorities in the city of La Guaira. Shortly after their arrival, the region was struck by twin earthquakes that caused significant infrastructure damage and loss of life.
While families of the deportees have expressed frustration regarding the lack of information following the natural disaster, the DHS maintained that the flight reached its destination safely and that all individuals on board were returned to their country of origin in accordance with federal law.
The Venezuelan government has provided limited information regarding the status of the deportees in the wake of the earthquake, leaving many families to navigate the aftermath of the disaster on their own.
