Illegal Border Crossings End in Tragedy for Afghan Migrants

A group of Afghan nationals who attempted to bypass legal border controls faced the harsh reality of illegal migration after being intercepted by Turkish authorities.

One of the 12 migrants who spoke to BBC Afghan Forensic, quadruple amputee Shahsawar, 21, is carried by another man, on a red-and-blue striped rug, while a third looks on, in a tree-lined Afghan landscape. All wear brown salwar-kameez, the two unnamed, bearded, men hats and patterned scarves.

A group of approximately 50 Afghan nationals, all aged 25 or under, learned the hard way that violating national borders carries severe consequences. After utilizing people smugglers to cross into the Turkish city of Van in sub-zero temperatures, the group was detained by Turkish border guards.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in illegal migration, as the individuals involved were ultimately returned to Afghanistan after their attempt to reach Europe failed.

While the migrants have leveled allegations of mistreatment against Turkish border forces, the Turkish foreign ministry maintains that its border operations are conducted in accordance with national and international law.

The ministry emphasized that Turkey remains committed to a secure and sustainable migration-management system, noting that its robust enforcement measures have been instrumental in halting irregular migration flows toward the European Union.

The migrants, who were eventually repatriated to Kabul, suffered significant medical complications, including frostbite, due to the extreme conditions of the mountainous border region.

Activists acknowledge that increased border surveillance has made these illegal routes increasingly perilous, yet the responsibility for these outcomes lies with those who choose to bypass legal immigration channels and subject themselves to the hazards of illicit border crossings.
