The rule of law is finally catching up to those responsible for the horrific tragedy at Utumishi Girls' School. Kenyan prosecutors have announced that eight students will face sixteen counts of murder after evidence revealed they allegedly orchestrated a fire that decimated a dormitory last month.

The blaze, which broke out on May 28, resulted in the deaths of sixteen pupils between the ages of 15 and 18, while dozens more suffered injuries.

Police investigations, including forensic analysis of CCTV footage and witness interviews, identified the suspects as the individuals behind the planning and execution of the arson, which involved setting mattresses ablaze near an exit.

The tragedy was compounded by clear failures in school safety protocols, as students were trapped when an emergency exit failed to open. Education Minister Julius Ogamba confirmed that the school had breached safety standards, including severe overcrowding.

This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of arson in Kenyan boarding schools, often fueled by students lashing out against disciplinary measures.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has made it clear that such criminal conduct will not be tolerated, signaling a necessary shift toward holding individuals strictly accountable for their actions, regardless of their age.
