The Utah Department of Health and Human Services has officially revoked the residential treatment license for the Provo Canyon School’s Springville campus, ordering the facility to cease all operations by August 6.
State regulators cited a series of serious noncompliance issues, including the use of unnecessary physical restraints, aggressive contact, and documented instances of neglect. This move follows ongoing scrutiny of the facility, which markets itself as an intensive psychiatric residential center for girls aged 12 to 18.
The school, which maintains it is evaluating its legal options for an appeal, has faced mounting pressure from former residents, including socialite Paris Hilton. Hilton, who attended the school in the 1990s under different ownership, has campaigned extensively against the facility, alleging that she was subjected to physical abuse and solitary confinement.
While the school claims its priority remains providing quality care, state authorities have also imposed temporary restrictions on the institution's boys' campus in Provo. Regulators there found that staff failed to protect a resident during a fight and neglected to seek immediate medical attention for his injuries.
The boys' facility is currently barred from accepting new admissions as the state continues its oversight of the troubled teen industry.
