Ukraine’s military has significantly escalated its campaign to reclaim sovereignty by systematically dismantling Russia’s maritime supply lines. Through a relentless series of drone strikes, Ukrainian forces have targeted the so-called 'shadow fleet' of commercial oil tankers that Vladimir Putin relies on to fuel his illegal occupation of Crimea.

According to drone force commander Robert Brovdi, at least 25 ships have been struck and set ablaze in the Sea of Azov over a four-day period, with Ukrainian military reports suggesting the total number of vessels hit could be as high as 36.

These strikes are a direct blow to Putin’s ability to maintain fuel supplies, which are already critically low across Russia. With fuel rationing now affecting over 90% of Russian regions and the Black Sea Fleet effectively hiding in the port of Novorossiysk, the Kremlin’s logistical infrastructure is crumbling.

Even Russian pro-war commentators have admitted that these tankers are essentially defenseless, turning the Sea of Azov into a shooting gallery for Ukrainian operators. By targeting the tankers and oil refineries deep within Russian territory, Ukraine is ensuring that the consequences of this war are felt by the state that initiated the aggression.

As President Zelensky has rightly maintained, Russia must experience the reality of the war it wages. While some have labeled these strikes an escalation, they represent a necessary and overdue effort to sever the lifelines of an occupying force.
