In a clear display of aggression, Moscow unleashed a massive coordinated strike against Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure, utilizing more than 30 ballistic missiles and over 170 drones. The bombardment hit 12 regions, with the capital of Kyiv suffering the most significant damage.
The strikes targeted vital substations connected to the Rivne and Khmelnytsky nuclear power plants, resulting in widespread blackouts and disruptions to water and heating supplies as winter temperatures begin to plummet. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that residential buildings and a kindergarten were among the sites damaged in the onslaught.
While Kyiv’s mayor reported that some water and heating services were being restored, the energy minister confirmed power cuts across five regions. These attacks occur just days before Ukrainian and Russian delegations are set to meet in Abu Dhabi for trilateral talks.
Zelensky slammed the timing of the strikes, accusing Moscow of attempting to use the destruction of civilian infrastructure to gain leverage ahead of the negotiations.
The escalation follows recent diplomatic efforts, including a ceasefire in the Kherson region brokered by Melania Trump, which allowed for the evacuation of civilians from the occupied town of Oleshky.
As the conflict continues, Zelensky has reiterated his call for consistent support from the United States, emphasizing the need for increased sanctions and a unified front against Russian aggression to secure a lasting peace.
