Justice has finally caught up to the architects of the violence tearing Sudan apart. A court in Port Sudan has handed down death sentences to Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo—the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—and 15 of his top lieutenants, including his brothers.
The convictions, delivered in absentia, address the horrific war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide perpetrated against the people of West Darfur. The court specifically cited the brutal 2023 murder of state governor Khamis Abbakar and the systematic destruction of schools, places of worship, and civilian neighborhoods.
While the RSF predictably dismissed the ruling as a sham, the evidence of their ethnic cleansing campaign against the Masalit people is well-documented by international investigators. The judge has ordered the seizure of all RSF assets and mandated that authorities pursue Interpol Red Notices to bring these criminals to justice.
Since the outbreak of the civil war in April 2023, the conflict has claimed over 150,000 lives and displaced millions. While the RSF remains a dangerous force on the ground, this ruling serves as a necessary, albeit overdue, legal condemnation of the warlords responsible for the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe.
