The reckless nature of Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine has spilled over into NATO territory, as a Russian Geran-2 drone—also known as a Shahed-136—struck a residential apartment building in the Romanian town of Galați. The explosion, which occurred on the 10th floor, caused a fire and left two civilians injured, requiring hospital treatment.
While Romanian officials suggest the drone’s trajectory was altered after being engaged by Ukrainian air defenses, the incident represents a significant escalation, as it is the first time Russian drone incursions have resulted in direct harm to Romanian citizens.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned the strike as the most serious incident on Romanian soil since the war began, announcing the expulsion of the Russian consul in Constanța and the closure of the consulate.
Despite Moscow’s typical obfuscation and attempts to deflect blame, the reality remains that Russian munitions are frequently violating the sovereignty of neighboring nations. Romanian defense officials noted that they face severe constraints in intercepting these threats, as they are prohibited from firing into Ukrainian airspace.
In response to the strike, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reaffirmed the alliance's commitment to defending every inch of allied territory, while the Romanian government has formally requested an acceleration in the transfer of anti-drone capabilities from NATO partners.
This incident serves as a stark reminder that the consequences of Russia’s aggression do not respect international borders and that the security of the Black Sea region remains under constant threat.
