The humanitarian aid industry is once again reeling from a sickening scandal as Doctors Without Borders (MSF) confirms that its own staff members sexually abused at least 59 Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad.
This exploitation, which occurred throughout 2024, involved the exchange of food and job opportunities for sex, with internal investigations suggesting that some of these incidents may constitute human trafficking. The victims, already displaced by the brutal civil war in Sudan, were effectively held hostage by their need for basic survival.
Many refugees remained silent, fearing that reporting the abuse would result in the retaliatory withholding of life-saving aid. When complaints were finally filed, MSF’s internal procedures proved largely ineffective, leaving victims without support or recourse.
While MSF has issued a statement expressing regret for this 'serious breach' of their values, the damage is done. This incident is the latest in a long string of sexual exploitation scandals involving international humanitarian organizations that operate with little accountability.
As the crisis in Sudan continues to displace millions, this failure highlights the dangerous lack of oversight in the global aid apparatus.
