President William Ruto has taken decisive action to protect the livelihoods of Kenyan citizens, ordering a crackdown on foreign nationals operating small-scale businesses.
In a clear message to the international community, Ruto stated that Kenya welcomes legitimate investment that creates jobs and expands production, but will no longer tolerate foreign competitors crowding out local hawkers and small shop owners.
The directive, which takes effect next week, will be bolstered by upcoming legislation designed to reserve specific sectors of the economy exclusively for Kenyans. Ruto emphasized that the nation’s efforts to improve investor confidence were never intended to facilitate the arrival of foreign hawkers.
This move addresses long-standing frustrations among local traders who have faced increasing competition for scarce jobs and business opportunities. While Kenya currently hosts a significant population of refugees and migrants, the government is asserting its sovereign right to prioritize its own workforce.
The decision follows rising social tensions, including public confrontations between locals and foreign traders in Nairobi. By enforcing these boundaries, the Ruto administration is placing the economic security of its own people at the forefront of its policy agenda ahead of next year's election.
