The family of Agnes Wanjiru, who was found dead in a septic tank near a British army training camp in Kenya over a decade ago, is expressing outrage after learning their long-awaited day in court has been delayed until May 2027. Robert James Purkiss, a 38-year-old former British soldier, stands accused of the 2012 murder of the 21-year-old mother.
Purkiss was arrested in the UK last November and is currently contesting his extradition to Kenya to face trial, maintaining his innocence regarding the allegations.
The victim's family, who had already made travel arrangements for a hearing originally scheduled for next month, stated they were informed of the postponement through the UK embassy without any official explanation. This latest development pushes the timeline for the case into its 15th year.
A 2019 Kenyan inquest previously concluded that Wanjiru was unlawfully killed by British military personnel, and a Kenyan High Court issued an arrest warrant for a British national in 2025.
While the UK government has pledged support for the pursuit of justice, the legal process remains mired in bureaucratic delays, leaving the victim's family to navigate years of uncertainty while they await a resolution.
