A federal judge has officially thrown out Donald Trump's $10 billion defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal, putting an end to a legal battle that the court described as 'grasping at straws.' Judge Darrin Gayles dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled, ruling that the lawsuit failed to meet the rigorous 'actual malice' standard required by law.
Trump had sued the outlet and its parent company, Dow Jones, over a 2023 report regarding a letter allegedly written by Trump to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday. Trump has consistently denied writing or signing the document, which featured a hand-drawn outline of a woman and suggestive language.
In his 20-page ruling, Judge Gayles emphasized that the newspaper conducted a 'thoughtful and detailed investigation' and noted that the First Amendment protects the right of the press to publish information even when public figures deny the underlying accusations.
The judge correctly observed that allowing a public figure to block negative reporting simply by issuing a denial would fundamentally undermine the American tradition of free speech. Because Trump’s legal team failed to prove the defendants acted with reckless disregard for the truth, the court determined that the case had no standing to proceed.
