Tensions are boiling over in New Delhi as the Congress-led INDIA opposition alliance prepares for a massive rally at Ramlila Maidan to demand the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. The protest centers on a Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls, which has resulted in the removal of 130 million names.

While the Election Commission of India maintains the purge is a routine administrative necessity to remove deceased or relocated individuals, opposition leaders—including Rahul Gandhi—are crying foul, labeling the process 'vote chori' or vote theft.

The controversy gained steam following reports that Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar allegedly bypassed internal objections from his colleagues to push through these changes.

Despite the opposition’s claims that they are defending the Constitution and the integrity of the vote, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Election Commission have flatly denied any wrongdoing.

Delhi authorities have imposed strict conditions on the rally, including a 5pm curfew and mandatory surveillance, while thousands of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to maintain order.

As the city prepares for the influx of protesters, the local business community remains divided, with some fearing economic disruption during the Diwali festive season.

This rally follows a series of increasingly heated demonstrations, including a recent march to the Supreme Court, as the opposition attempts to mobilize public anger against what they characterize as the demolition of democratic norms.
