In a move that signals a serious shift toward national discipline, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has ordered his cabinet ministers and senior government officials to undergo rigorous military training at the Hurso military facility.
Photos released by the Prime Minister show him alongside top officials—including the Speaker of the House of Federation, the Finance Minister, and the Health Minister—engaged in combat exercises.
Abiy is clear about his objective: to cultivate a leadership class that is physically fit, morally grounded, and intellectually capable of driving the nation forward. By his own account, military institutions provide the essential framework for patriotism, teamwork, and accountability that civilian bureaucracies often lack.
The Prime Minister’s initiative comes at a critical juncture for Ethiopia, which is currently grappling with internal instability in the Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia regions, as well as rising geopolitical tensions with neighboring Eritrea.
Rather than relying on soft-power platitudes, Abiy is betting that a leadership team tempered by military discipline will be better equipped to secure victory for the country’s future. It is a bold assertion that in a volatile region, the distinction between civilian goals and military targets must be bridged by a shared commitment to national strength.
