The political alliance between the United States and Italy is under strain following an open row between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The conflict ignited after Trump claimed in an interview with Italy’s La7 TV that Meloni 'begged' him for a photograph during the G7 summit in France.
Meloni, who expressed astonishment at the comments, took to social media to label the claim as 'entirely made-up' and asserted that neither she nor Italy would ever beg for favor. The dispute appears to be the latest manifestation of a fraying relationship, largely driven by Meloni’s vocal opposition to the U.S. war with Iran.
Since the conflict began, Trump has publicly questioned Meloni’s courage and criticized her leadership. The fallout has been swift, with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceling a scheduled trip to the U.S. and leaders across the Italian political spectrum rallying to defend the Prime Minister’s dignity.
While Trump maintains that his comments were merely a reflection of his own perspective, Italian officials argue that the rhetoric is part of a pattern of behavior that undermines the U.S.-led Western alliance.
Meloni herself pointedly remarked that it is regrettable the President does not show the same level of determination toward the enemies of the West as he does toward his allies.
