Indian authorities have taken action to prevent a potential tragedy in Delhi, forcibly removing activist Sonam Wangchuk from his protest site after he spent 20 days on a hunger strike. The 59-year-old, who had been consuming only salt and water, was transported to a government hospital under police and paramilitary supervision.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma confirmed the move was executed in compliance with a Delhi High Court order, which mandated that the government monitor Wangchuk’s health and provide necessary medical intervention.
Wangchuk, a central figure in the 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CJP) movement, had repeatedly refused to end his fast despite significant weight loss and physical distress. The CJP, a group born from online satire, has been demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over exam irregularities.
While supporters and opposition figures like Arvind Kejriwal have attempted to politicize the situation by calling for the minister's removal, the government has maintained its position, with Pradhan previously dismissing the movement as a collection of disruptive elements.
With Wangchuk now under medical supervision, the status of the group's planned march to parliament remains uncertain.
