President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to remove Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has ignited protests across Ukraine, as citizens and military personnel voice frustration over the sudden shake-up. The dismissal follows a period of intense, systemic friction between the defense ministry and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Fedorov, who was appointed in January and championed high-tech warfare and drone-centric strategies, openly admitted that his reform initiatives were frequently blocked by the military command. Zelensky acknowledged the internal conflict, noting that he had been forced to mediate between the two factions, yet ultimately opted to remove the minister.
Fedorov, who refused an offer to remain as an adviser, claimed his proposals for asymmetric warfare were being stifled. The fallout has been immediate, with prominent military figures and advisers resigning in protest, describing the move as a significant blow to the nation's defense capabilities.
While supporters of Fedorov praise his efforts to modernize procurement and combat corruption, the administration is now scrambling to stabilize leadership as the war against Russia continues.
As Zelensky faces pressure to justify the move, he maintains that he is listening to the public, even as critics within the armed forces warn that the administration has committed a grave error in leadership during a critical phase of the conflict.
