The brief period of silence in the Kherson region has come to an abrupt end, with Russian forces resuming strikes on Ukrainian territory immediately following the expiration of a six-day ceasefire.
The pause, which allowed for the evacuation of hundreds of civilians from the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, was quickly exploited by both Moscow and Kyiv to rotate units, strengthen defensive positions, and replenish ammunition supplies.
While the ceasefire was facilitated by First Lady Melania Trump, the Kremlin made it clear that the event was an isolated occurrence rather than a shift in its broader military strategy. Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the prospect of future truces, confirming that the war's trajectory remains unchanged.
The resumption of hostilities was marked by a Russian drone attack on a civilian vehicle and a strike on a medical facility in Kherson city. In response, Ukrainian forces launched drone strikes against energy infrastructure within Russia, including an oil refinery in Samara.
Despite the diplomatic efforts that enabled the temporary evacuation of residents, the reality on the ground remains a grinding war of attrition where tactical military necessity consistently overrides humanitarian considerations.
