The Russian military has intensified its assault on Ukraine, deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure in a series of strikes that have left at least 38 dead and scores injured.
In a particularly heinous attack on the Zaporizhzhia region, nine 3,000kg aerial bombs obliterated a school being used as a humanitarian aid distribution center, trapping dozens of civilians under the rubble.
While the Kremlin attempted to claim the site was a military target, there is no credible evidence to support this, and the site was known to be a public aid hub. The brutality extended to the central city of Dnipro, where a Russian missile strike destroyed a hospice, forcing the evacuation of nearly 50 terminally ill patients, some as old as 90.
Further strikes hit a hospital in Kharkiv and energy infrastructure across nine regions, leaving the capital, Kyiv, without water and forcing the suspension of its metro system.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has been vocal about the dire situation, noting that Ukraine’s ability to protect its citizens is hampered by a critical shortage of air defense systems and stalled Western weapons deliveries. Despite the ongoing carnage, the Kremlin continues to push for maximalist demands that amount to a total Ukrainian surrender.
While the White House has announced upcoming trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi and a meeting hosted by First Lady Melania Trump, Zelensky remains skeptical, noting that Russia has shown no serious indication of pursuing a genuine peace.
The reality on the ground remains grim as Moscow continues to use its missile and drone arsenal to terrorize the Ukrainian population, exposing the urgent need for a more robust defense posture.
