The long-suffering residents of Oleshky, a city devastated by the Russian occupation, have finally crossed into safety. After years of being trapped in a frontline city without electricity, water, or reliable food supplies—with many forced to forage for weeds to survive—a humanitarian ceasefire allowed for a successful evacuation.

The operation, which involved a complex journey through Russian-occupied territory and Belarus, brought families back together in the Chernihiv region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the efforts of US First Lady Melania Trump in helping broker the ceasefire that made this rescue possible.

The conditions in Oleshky had become dire, with escape routes heavily mined and subject to constant drone threats. While 25 buses were deployed to transport those seeking safety, some residents chose to remain in the war-torn city.

Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, who coordinated the effort alongside his Russian counterpart, noted that those who stayed would receive humanitarian aid.

The ceasefire, which provided a temporary reprieve from the conflict that has raged since the 2022 invasion, highlights the ongoing struggle of Ukrainian citizens living under the shadow of Russian aggression.
