In a significant diplomatic development, hundreds of residents from the devastated city of Oleshky have been successfully evacuated following a humanitarian ceasefire. The operation, which saw evacuees transported via planes to Gomel, Belarus, before heading to the Chernihiv region, was facilitated by a ceasefire brokered by former First Lady Melania Trump.
Russian and Ukrainian officials, including human rights ombudsmen Yana Lantratova and Dmytro Lubinets, coordinated the effort, which involved the demining of roads and the use of a 25-bus convoy.
While the mission successfully relocated many, a significant number of residents chose to remain in the war-torn town, where basic infrastructure like electricity and water remains largely absent.
The ceasefire, the most extensive in the Kherson region since the 2022 invasion, was strictly limited in scope, with the Kremlin explicitly stating it does not signal a broader truce.
While the evacuation provided a rare moment of relief, some observers remain wary that the pause in hostilities could be utilized by Russian forces to consolidate their military positions along the Dnipro river.
The mission, which included the delivery of humanitarian aid to those remaining, underscores the complex reality of life in occupied zones where residents face the daily dangers of landmines and total infrastructure collapse.
