The Chinese Communist Party is once again demonstrating that it views trade as an extension of its geopolitical aggression. Beijing is currently targeting Taiwan’s agricultural sector, specifically the atemoya fruit, in what Taipei officials are calling a 'raise, trap, kill' scheme.
By artificially inflating demand for the fruit, China creates a dangerous reliance among Taiwanese farmers, only to pull the rug out from under them with sudden import bans, taxes, or regulatory hurdles. This is a well-documented pattern of economic warfare; Beijing previously crippled Taiwanese pineapple exports in 2021 as a form of political coercion.
Now, the regime is attempting to replicate this disruption with the atemoya, all while simultaneously expanding its own domestic cultivation to eventually render Taiwan’s specialty crop obsolete.
While some opposition politicians in Taiwan are downplaying these risks, the reality remains that Beijing’s actions are designed to destabilize the island’s economy and force political compliance.
As China continues to ramp up military intimidation and blockade simulations, it is clear that no sector—not even the fruit market—is safe from the CCP’s campaign to undermine Taiwanese sovereignty.
