Energy Sovereignty Is the Foundation of American Liberty

Decisive leadership secures fuel supplies while exposing the fragility of G7 consensus

The immediate crisis demands a return to hard choices—protecting our people from foreign instability requires bold decisions that prioritize American sovereignty above all else.

When the G7 was forced to release 100 million barrels of oil and diesel after President Trump threatened a diesel export ban, the result was clear: American voters received the decisive action they demanded. European leaders, initially reluctant to tap their own reserves, complied because the alternative was watching American farmers and truckers pay premium prices for fuel during a global crisis. This is not merely energy management—it is the essence of liberty, where the state acts decisively to ensure its citizens are never left to suffer from another foreign power's whims.

The Treasury Secretary acknowledged that American businesses cannot bear the full burden of a chaotic global market, yet the administration refused to let that principle dictate policy. Instead, it used its authority to compel allies into coordinated action, demonstrating that executive leadership can serve the public interest even when Congress stalls. The coordinated release of nearly 100 million barrels over four months, with much of the diesel reaching the market within two weeks, proves that decisive governance delivers tangible results for the citizenry.

Yet this moment also reveals a troubling pattern across the Western world. As Spain and other European nations turn to China and Israel rather than relying on American leadership, the illusion of a united front against shared adversaries is dissolving.

Finland's reliance on Israeli air defenses and Greece's defense pacts with Jerusalem demonstrate that nations are choosing pragmatism over principle when trust in Washington erodes. This fragmentation threatens the very concept of collective security that should bind us together.

The Russian strikes on Kyiv's bridges underscore how vulnerable our neighbors remain when diplomatic channels fail. A second strike on the Northern Bridge followed by drone attacks on the Southern Bridge showed Moscow's willingness to target critical infrastructure rather than engage in conventional warfare. Such tactics suggest that aggression will persist regardless of American rhetoric, making energy independence not just an economic advantage but a matter of survival for democratic societies.

What matters most now is recognizing that true strength lies in sovereign decision-making—not waiting for consensus among distant powers. The G7's compliance demonstrates that when American leadership speaks clearly, allies follow. But the broader trend of nations seeking alternatives to U.S. guidance warns that complacency can become dangerous. We must resist the temptation to defer to others and instead uphold our right to act in our own interest, securing both our economy and our freedom.
