Ottawa's Meddling Is an Attack on American Sovereignty

A foreign government using tariffs and backroom deals to sway U.S. voters demands consequences, not diplomatic excuses.

The United States Embassy in Ottawa has released evidence that Canadian officials are actively working to influence American midterm elections, and this is far more than a diplomatic disagreement. It is a foreign government attempting to dictate the outcome of U.S. elections through targeted economic pressure and backroom coordination with American partisans. Sovereignty means that American voters, not foreign ministers, choose American leaders.

The Embassy’s fact sheet points to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly discussing her meetings with U.S. governors and potential presidential candidates as part of a strategy to sway election results. It also identifies Ontario Premier Doug Ford pushing for retaliatory tariffs aimed at politically sensitive regions of the United States. These are not abstract trade disputes; they are calculated efforts to punish states vital to the current administration’s base and to tilt the electoral map in favor of preferred U.S. candidates.

When a foreign power deploys tariffs as a weapon against American voters, it strikes at the core of self-government. Election integrity cannot exist if Ottawa can threaten economic pain to shape who controls Congress or the White House. Law and order require that borders be respected, and accountable government means no outside actor may interfere in the domestic political process without consequence.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has tried to deflect by pointing to existing trade disputes, but his dismissive attitude toward these allegations only deepens the insult. Worse, Canadian officials have responded to the Embassy’s findings by circulating petitions to remove U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra, whose job is to protect the integrity of American elections. Ottawa is treating the messenger as the problem while continuing to meddle in affairs that are none of its business.

Washington must treat this as the sovereignty crisis it is. There should be no more polite shrugs or trade-only frameworks while Canadian ministers coordinate with U.S. Democrats to manipulate American democracy. The appropriate response is firm accountability: expose the full extent of the coordination, reject any retaliatory tariffs designed for political ends, and make clear that interference in U.S. elections will carry a cost.

The ballot box belongs to American citizens alone. If Canada’s leaders refuse to respect that boundary, the United States has every right to defend its elections, its sovereignty, and its constitutional order against foreign intrusion.
