Strength Deters Evil Where Retreat Invites It

When governments retreat from enforcement at home and deterrence abroad, they surrender the sovereignty they exist to protect.

Decisive action is the only currency that buys security. The Israeli military's operation in Hebron is not an overreaction; it is the minimum required response to the murder of two soldiers at a checkpoint and the wounding of three others. Sovereignty means nothing if a state will not punish those who attack its soldiers and destroy the networks that arm them.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to go house to house in Hebron, removing weapons and dismantling terrorist infrastructure. Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the operation targets homes, businesses, and industrial sites used by those who threaten Israeli lives.

Critics call it collective punishment, but the alternative is allowing terrorist safe havens to persist within the West Bank. Liberty and law and order depend on a government that treats an attack on its soldiers as an attack on the state itself.

The same failure of resolve appears closer to home. Former Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino called the administration's withdrawal of federal agents from Minneapolis a surrender, lamenting that the operation did not go further in removing illegal aliens.

Bovino insists his agents were the victims of unprecedented violence and that those who resist enforcement must face consequences. When political pressure forces a retreat from immigration enforcement, the rule of law retreats with it, and national sovereignty becomes a suggestion rather than a boundary.

Economic surrender is no less dangerous. The Trump administration is easing tariffs on select Canadian goods such as plywood, machinery, and refrigeration equipment to relieve American industries, including Maine's agricultural sector, while imposing new levies on carpets and waste products.

This is not a retreat from trade pressure; it is a calibrated defense of American commerce against Canada's discriminatory treatment of U.S. exports. A government that allows foreign markets to exploit American producers abandons the economic sovereignty that underwrites domestic liberty.

Finally, the most immediate defense of sovereignty rests with the individual. When a 16-year-old gunman breached Silver Rail Elementary School in Oregon and had already murdered three young boys and a teacher, 36-year-old carpenter Kaylub Giamanco retrieved his handgun and moved toward the gunfire.

He neutralized the attacker while a teacher struggled with him inside a classroom. Seconds count, and the only thing standing between a predator and his victims was a prepared, armed citizen exercising individual responsibility rather than waiting for bureaucracy.

The thread running through Hebron, Minneapolis, the U.S.-Canada trade dispute, and an Oregon classroom is clear: strength deters evil, and retreat invites it. Accountable government must secure its borders, enforce its laws, defend its markets, and recognize that the right to self-defense is not a privilege granted by the state but a precondition of liberty. Nations and citizens who refuse to surrender their resolve will survive; those who do will not.
