Vance Is Right: America First Must Replace Endless War

Republican losses in Texas and Congress prove that foreign wars and internal fractures have opened the door to radicals who want to abolish ICE and expand government control.

The Republican Party’s midterm disaster is not a mystery. It is the predictable result of an administration that poured blood and treasure into an Iran war while inflation gutted working families and the southern border remained open. Vice President JD Vance has done the party a service by saying aloud what the election results already proved: the conflict in Iran cost Republicans control of the House and Senate, and the price is too high.

Vance backed the February strikes on Tehran, yet he now correctly identifies the war as an electoral albatross. President Trump has granted him room to disagree, calling the split “fine,” but the split itself reveals a deeper rot. A party that cannot defend its own voters from rising prices while fighting a distant war has abandoned the America First compact that won it power.

The collapse is most visible in Texas, where Democrat James Talarico became the first Democrat to win a Senate seat there since 1988, in the most expensive Senate race in history. Incumbent Ken Paxton was weakened by his own party’s past impeachment efforts and lingering scandals, while the Bush family broke ranks to back the Democrat.

Hispanic voters, once a GOP asset, turned away over aggressive immigration enforcement, and Governor Greg Abbott also fell. This was not a swing-state anomaly; it was a bloodbath in the nation’s premier conservative stronghold.

While Republicans bled ground, the far-left advanced. Abdul El-Sayed, a Michigan Senator-elect with denied Muslim Brotherhood ties, campaigned on government-run Medicare for All and criticized military aid to Israel. Melat Kiros, a Democratic Socialists of America-backed winner in Colorado, has called for abolishing ICE.

Ilhan Omar won a fifth term despite a federal investigation into her immigration paperwork and a search warrant at her Washington home. Maryland’s Adrian Boafo is rushing to defend the federal bureaucracy against job cuts. These are not policy disagreements; they are direct assaults on law and order, national sovereignty, and limited government.

Abroad, the stakes are equally stark. Russia’s “double-tap” strike on a shelter in Kamyshuvakha killed at least 40 and left more than 30 missing, an atrocity Ukrainian President Zelensky called a war crime. Yet the same Washington that debates endless entanglements in the Middle East has failed to give Ukraine the air defenses it needs while neglecting America’s own border. Sovereignty means defending the homeland first, not subsidizing foreign wars that drain the treasury and inflame voters at home.

The path forward is Vance’s four-point roadmap: end the Iran war, defeat inflation, return to America First principles, and reassess the U.S.-Israel relationship. Anything less is an invitation to more progressive victories, more open borders, and more government control over American lives. Liberty, law and order, and accountable government depend on a conservative party that puts its own citizens first.
