Enforce Accountability, Defend Sovereignty, Lead in AI

To safeguard liberty and sovereignty, Washington must enforce accountability in detention, counter Russian aggression, and maintain a decisive edge in artificial intelligence.

Washington must enforce accountability in immigration detention, confront Russian aggression, and secure American technological dominance to preserve liberty and sovereignty.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General has detailed systemic failures at a temporary detention center in the Florida Everglades. The facility, established by Governor DeSantis in 2025 and closed in June 2026, was the subject of a surprise inspection in January 2026.

Investigators found that the site failed to meet federal standards for medical care, hygiene, and living conditions, noting the use of 18‑square‑foot outdoor metal enclosures that state officials called de‑escalation areas. Between July 2025 and January 2026, 79 individuals were placed in these enclosures for periods ranging from minutes to nearly two hours.

The report also cited limited access to showers and clean drinking water. Although federal funds covered operational costs, DHS maintained that the state retained day‑to‑day management authority, highlighting a gap in accountability that undermines the rule of law.

Russia’s recent drone strike on a train near the Polish border illustrates the escalating threat to European stability.

The strike occurred at Yahodyn, just 30 minutes after a train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other Western security advisers had cleared the area, and Ukrainian authorities confirmed that passengers were evacuated before impact.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus described the attack as the act of a barbaric leader, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that military operations will continue across the region.

The proximity of the strike—only 1.2 miles from NATO territory—has prompted Ukrainian calls for accelerated delivery of air defense interceptors, underscoring the urgent need for a robust defensive posture.

In the realm of artificial intelligence, the United States faces a strategic contest that cannot be ceded to Beijing. President Trump has made it clear that securing a decisive lead in AI is a national priority, a stance that some, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have challenged by advocating for development slowdowns.

However, AI has become a core component of national security and strategic infrastructure, making cooperation with China essentially impossible. Despite U.S. export restrictions on critical hardware, China continues to advance its own AI agenda with state backing and open‑source technology, while warning against foreign intelligence threats.

As Washington prepares for high‑level talks, the imperative remains to preserve America’s technological edge rather than accept any narrative that frames American security as a global governance issue.

Addressing these intertwined challenges requires a government that holds its agencies to high standards, confronts foreign aggression with resolve, and invests in the technologies that define modern power. Only by enforcing accountability, defending sovereignty, and leading in innovation can the nation safeguard liberty and maintain the rule of order.
