Freedom First: Why Liberty Outshines Control

The pilot's bravery and the diesel ban reveal why limited government and free markets are essential for safety and prosperity.

In an age of escalating threats, the surest path to safety and prosperity lies in trusting individuals and free markets rather than expanding government authority.

Captain Smit Machchhar's actions during the Flydubai flight illustrate the power of personal resolve. When his co-pilot turned violent, stabbing him and sending the aircraft into a 17,000-foot descent, Machchhar refused to surrender. By opening the cockpit door and allowing passengers to intervene, he averted a mass casualty event. The plane diverted safely to Saudi Arabia, and world leaders praised his courage.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration's consideration of a ban on U.S. diesel exports threatens to raise costs for American families. With diesel prices at record highs, restricting the 1.2 to 1.5 million barrels per day that the country sends abroad would not lower domestic prices but could create shortages. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's insistence that the United States should not subsidize foreign markets while citizens suffer at the pump reflects a misguided priority.

The failure of gaming giants to protect children from online predators further demonstrates the limits of corporate responsibility. Australia's eSafety Commission found that platforms such as Steam, Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft rely on honor systems that allow minors to bypass safeguards.

Valve, the owner of Steam, did not employ industry-standard technology to detect child exploitation material. While some call for stricter regulation, the solution lies in market competition and parental vigilance, not in expanding state control.

Across Europe, nations are increasingly rejecting supranational mandates in favor of national sovereignty. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has deepened economic ties with Beijing, drawing criticism from Brussels, while Finland and Greece have turned to Israel for defense systems. This realignment underscores the reality that countries must prioritize their own security and prosperity over idealistic union.

From the cockpit to the marketplace, the pattern is clear: liberty, not centralized authority, produces the best outcomes. Empowering individuals, respecting free markets, and safeguarding national sovereignty are the pillars upon which a resilient society is built. The time has come to reject the temptation of control and embrace the freedom that has always defined the nation's strength.
