Midterm Losses Are No Excuse to Surrender Sovereignty

The GOP’s post-election soul-searching must not become a pretext for abandoning border security, strength against Iran, and national independence.

The Republican Party’s post-midterm soul-searching is a trap if it becomes an excuse to abandon the America First agenda. The 2026 elections stripped the GOP of the House and Senate, with losses even in Texas and Kansas, and outgoing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the results an “extinction-level event.” Yet the correct lesson is not to moderate on immigration, trade, or national defense. It is to double down on the sovereignty and strength that defined the Trump presidency.

The stakes are visible in Houston, where Mayor John Whitmire has ordered police to stop cooperating with federal immigration authorities. Under his directive, local officers cannot notify ICE about individuals with administrative warrants unless those individuals are arrested for a separate jailable offense.

The Department of Homeland Security has rightly condemned the policy, warning that sanctuary rules obstruct the partnerships needed to remove criminal illegal aliens. A GOP that retreats from border enforcement is a GOP that surrenders law and order to Democratic mayors who put activists ahead of taxpayers.

The same resolve is required against Iran. The State Department is offering $20 million through Rewards for Justice for intelligence on Tehran’s nuclear program, including relocation for whistleblowers.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has lost track of Iran’s centrifuge production and inventory, while the U.S. military’s new Task Force Iron Gate in Tampa works alongside a naval blockade that has already prevented over $25 billion in illicit crude oil exports.

Tehran’s frantic attempts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz prove that American strength forces the regime to the table. Any Republican drift toward appeasement would throw away that leverage.

Sovereignty is under assault abroad as well. EU bureaucrat Michel Barnier insists Britain cannot enjoy single-market access without accepting the “four freedoms,” including the free movement of people, rejecting any “a la carte” relationship. Nigel Farage has called Barnier “arrogant, out of touch and a bully,” and he is right.

Brussels demands the surrender of national control as the price of commerce, a lesson Republicans should heed before entertaining any compromise that places international bodies above American law.

Inside the party, Vice-President JD Vance has acknowledged that the coming months will be defined by internal friction, and figures such as Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are already positioning for 2028. President Trump has signaled where he stands by appointing hardline immigration advocate Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff.

The coalition that won in 2024 faltered because of public frustration over the economy, immigration, and the war with Iran—not because Americans rejected limited government or secure borders. The answer is better execution of the same principles, not a pivot to the center.

Liberty, sovereignty, law and order, and accountable government are not negotiable planks in a platform; they are the foundation of self-government. If the GOP uses its midterm losses to justify open borders, nuclear timidity, or deference to foreign bureaucrats, it will confirm the voters’ worst fears and forfeit its claim to power. The party must choose strength now, or it will have nothing left to offer in 2028.
