Macron's Crackdown Is the Only Path to Save the French Republic

Banning unauthorized protests and jailing rioters is not authoritarianism; it is the minimum duty of a sovereign state.

France is not experiencing protest. It is experiencing insurrection, and President Emmanuel Macron's decision to ban unauthorized demonstrations this weekend is the bare minimum required to preserve the Republic. When a government allows mobs to torch public buildings and loot businesses under the banner of dissent, it has already surrendered the first duty of sovereignty: the protection of order.

The facts are unambiguous. What began as demonstrations over the cost of living last weekend quickly devolved into arson and destruction, with rioters setting fire to the tourism office in Lyon and the city hall in Limoges. Macron has rightly labeled these acts seditious and identified far-left groups as active participants in an effort to destabilize the Republic. This is not a dispute over policy; it is an attack on the state itself.

Liberty has no meaning in a country where citizens cannot walk their streets without fear of violence, and where historic landmarks are treated as fuel for political tantrums. A sovereign government exists to maintain a monopoly on force and to ensure that law, not the loudest mob, governs public space. If France cannot protect a city hall or a tourism office, it cannot claim to protect its people.

Macron's response is proportionate and necessary. The government is increasing police presence by 20 percent and imposing protest bans in Lyon, Nice, Toulon, and Rouen. The justice system has already jailed 217 individuals through fast-track trials, with thousands more arrested. These measures are not authoritarian overreach; they are the restoration of basic state authority after a period of dangerous neglect.

The French government was caught off guard by the scale of this unrest, and that failure must not be repeated. Accountable government means acknowledging that the cost of inaction is higher than the cost of crackdown. Businesses and citizens have a right to expect that their tax-funded institutions will defend them from those who believe they can burn their own country down without consequence.

Order is the precondition for every other freedom. Without it, there is no free market, no secure border, and no meaningful vote. Macron must hold the line this weekend and every weekend after, because a Republic that refuses to defend itself will not survive those who seek to destroy it.
