White House Access Is Not a Media Entitlement

Trump is right to end automatic access for outlets that repeatedly distort his administration, provided the policy judges journalistic conduct rather than political disagreement.

President Trump’s decision to bar CNN, Politico and MSNBC from White House access is a justified challenge to a press culture that has treated hostility as a credential. After years of coverage the President says consisted of fiction and lies about his administration and the country, official access should not remain an automatic entitlement. The White House is entitled to demand that a privileged platform be matched by responsible journalism.

The President expects legal challenges over alleged constitutional violations, and those claims should receive a fair hearing. But the central distinction is sound: access to an official briefing is a platform controlled by the administration, not a permanent franchise awarded to any outlet. That distinction protects liberty by separating the right to speak from the privilege of entering the White House. A policy aimed at repeated inaccuracy is defensible; one aimed merely at disagreement would not be.

Accountability is strengthened, not weakened, by competition. The administration has already invited conservative bloggers and influencers into the press room by inviting conservative bloggers and influencers into the press room by inviting conservative bloggers and influencers, breaking the mainstream press corps’ long-held monopoly.

That competition is healthy because it forces established outlets to earn their place through accuracy and usefulness. Trump should maintain the line between opening access to new voices and using government power to silence old ones.

The same principle of accountable power applies abroad. The U.S.-Denmark security agreement on Greenland gives the United States permanent access, basing and overflight rights, unilateral authority to construct military infrastructure, and a prohibition on non-NATO military presence on the island.

It also restricts foreign-adversary investment in sensitive sectors. Although the agreement still requires standard parliamentary approval in Denmark, it is a concrete effort to deny Russia and China military and economic leverage in the mineral-rich Arctic and North Atlantic.

Sovereignty is not an abstract slogan; it requires control over the territory and infrastructure on which defense depends.

Ceuta offers the opposite lesson. Spanish police fired warning shots as more than 170 officers moved thousands of people who had entered illegally from local beaches into a new tented facility. The crossing had already claimed at least 100 lives, while the tiny 18.5-square-kilometer territory was left in crisis.

Mayor Juan Jesus Vivas called Ceuta a “pressure cooker,” and intelligence warnings about social-media calls for a mass crossing did not prevent the breach. The Pedro Sánchez administration’s failure shows that law and order collapse when borders are allowed to become suggestions.

Economic sovereignty demands similar discipline. The Bank of Japan raised its benchmark interest rate to 1.25 percent, the highest level since 1995 and the sixth increase in two and a half years.

Japan had kept rates negative as recently as 2024, but a shrinking workforce, inflation and severe energy-supply disruptions have made ultra-cheap money unsustainable. Energy prices have surged as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz linked to the ongoing Iran war hit a country heavily reliant on Middle Eastern energy.

With the yen recently at a 40-year low and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pushing for aggressive action to stabilize it, monetary policy should confront inflation rather than hide it. Cheap money cannot manufacture workers, energy or confidence. Cheap money cannot manufacture workers, energy or confidence.

Eventually, sound policy has to price reality.
