Self‑Defense Is the Cornerstone of Liberty

The Oregon massacre reveals that the right to self‑defense is not optional but essential for preserving innocent lives.

The right to defend oneself and one's community is the most fundamental guarantee of liberty, a principle that was put to the test in Bend, Oregon, when a 16‑year‑old gunman entered Silver Rail Elementary School. The swift intervention of an armed bystander, who pursued the shooter and neutralized him, demonstrates that individual self‑defense is the ultimate barrier against chaos.

The gunman, who had already fired on a vehicle, forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors, ultimately killing three children—aged five, eight, and eleven—and a teacher. Police arrived three minutes later, but the damage was already done, underscoring the limitations of relying solely on law enforcement. Despite Oregon's reputation for having some of the strictest gun regulations in the nation, the attacker still managed to obtain a firearm and carry out the massacre.

This tragedy should serve as a clarion call to protect the Second Amendment rights of law‑abiding citizens. Additional restrictions would not have prevented this crime; they would only disarm those who follow the law, leaving them vulnerable to those who ignore it.

Maintaining liberty also requires securing the nation's borders, as evidenced by the surge in deportations of Russian nationals from the United States and Europe. The rise in removals—from 222 in 2023 to over 1,200 in 2025—reflects a necessary commitment to enforcing immigration law and preserving national sovereignty.

Energy independence is another pillar of a sovereign nation, and the Trump administration's push to import Russian diesel while criticizing Ukraine's strikes on Russian infrastructure highlights a pragmatic approach to keeping American fuel prices stable. By prioritizing domestic economic needs over foreign entanglements, the administration demonstrates accountable governance.

The success of companies like Anthropic, which saw a 45% revenue increase to $16.8 billion, illustrates the power of free‑market innovation when government does not stifle it with excessive regulation.

In sum, recent events reinforce the timeless truth that liberty flourishes when individuals are empowered to protect themselves, when borders are defended, when energy policy serves the national interest, and when the economy is left to the ingenuity of the private sector. These principles must guide policy as the nation confronts future challenges.
