Sovereignty demands action against entrenched threats, and Israel was justified in destroying Hezbollah’s underground command complex in southern Lebanon. A tunnel network built over two decades to store rockets, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and anti-tank weapons was not a dormant structure; it was an Iranian-backed platform for aggression against a sovereign state.
The IDF says more than 1,000 tonnes of explosives brought down two kilometers of tunnels beneath Ali Taher Ridge, the command center for Hezbollah’s Badr unit. The US Geological Survey recorded the blast at magnitude 4.1, and the complex contained dozens of weapons funded and planned by Iran over twenty years. According to the IDF, all terrorists present were eliminated or forced to flee.
Liberty depends on security, not on pretending that fortified arsenals are harmless. Israeli citizens cannot enjoy ordinary freedoms while a hostile force maintains tunnels and weapons designed for attacks against them. Law and order require a state to deny armed organizations control over the territory and tools of war. National defense is a core duty of limited government: confront organized violence without treating every crisis as permission to expand state power at home.
Accountable government requires more than celebrating a successful strike. The displacement of residents and the seismic impact deserve scrutiny, but they do not erase the threat that produced the operation. The IDF’s stated mission—to destroy eight tunnels and reinforce a security zone intended to protect Israeli citizens—offers a concrete standard. Officials should explain how the zone will be maintained, how civilians will be protected and when the military objectives have been achieved.
The same principle applies to emerging technology. Anthropic’s threat report says state-sponsored Russian and Chinese groups, along with Iranian propaganda institutions, attempted to exploit AI for cyber espionage, surveillance and biological or conventional weapons development.
It also identifies Midnight Blizzard’s use of AI to refine malware and evade defenses. Policy should protect American private innovation rather than impose broad development bans or voluntary slowdowns that cede technological ground to adversaries.
The measure of Israel’s operation is whether it removes a proven attack network and leaves leaders answerable for the means used. Strong nations do not apologize for defending their citizens, but responsible governments must state their objectives and limits. On the facts presented, Hezbollah’s Iranian-funded command hub was a legitimate military target, and dismantling it was an act of sovereignty rather than excess.
