Iran-backed Houthi forces have launched a missile and drone barrage against Saudi Arabian cities following a coalition strike on a Houthi-controlled fuel depot near Sanaa. Coalition forces intercepted several projectiles aimed at Riyadh and Dammam, though falling shrapnel caused a limited fire at an Aramco administration building in Dhahran. This attack comes after a deadly Houthi assault that claimed fourteen lives at King Khalid International Airport over the weekend.
The barrage demonstrates a clear pattern of terrorism designed to destabilize the region and threaten vital infrastructure. By targeting civilian areas and energy sites, the Houthis seek to undermine Saudi sovereignty and disrupt global energy supplies, a tactic President Donald Trump previously identified as an attempt to manipulate oil prices. Such aggression also endangers international shipping chokepoints that are crucial to world commerce.
Permitting Iran to use proxies erodes the rule of law and encourages further lawlessness. The Saudi-led coalition has affirmed its commitment to restore the internationally recognized government in Yemen and to neutralize the threat posed by Iranian-backed militants. A firm response is necessary to reassert that attacks on sovereign nations will not be tolerated.
The United States has a direct interest in defending a key ally whose stability affects American security and economic interests. Allowing Iranian terror to go unchecked would embolden similar actions elsewhere and weaken the network of partnerships that underpins regional order.
Accordingly, Washington and its partners must stand with Saudi Arabia, increase diplomatic and economic pressure on Iran, and ensure that Houthi terrorists face concrete consequences for their violence. Only through resolute action can sovereignty, liberty, and law and order be preserved in the face of Iranian-sponsored terror.
