President Trump’s elevation of Stephen Miller to White House chief of staff is not merely a personnel change; it is a declaration that the executive branch will stop negotiating with the establishment and start enforcing the law. By replacing Susie Wiles with a proven conservative operative who has stood with the President since the 2016 campaign, the administration is choosing loyalty to the republic over the cautious approach of the political class.
Miller’s record leaves no doubt about his priorities. He drove the administration’s most robust immigration enforcement efforts, championed national sovereignty at the border, and supported military operations against drug cartels and hostile regimes. Senator Mike Lee has praised him as a “true conservative warrior” and a “staunch defender of law and order.” That is the temperament required to dismantle bureaucratic resistance and secure the nation.
The alternative is visible in Indonesia, where authorities have arrested President Prabowo Subianto’s chief of staff, Listyo Sigit Prabowo, along with two senior police officers, for allegedly wiretapping the President’s private communications without legal authorization. The operation reportedly targeted journalists, politicians, and business leaders, and treason carries a potential death sentence under Indonesian law. When surveillance power is wielded by unaccountable insiders, the result is internal warfare, economic instability, and a government that serves its own factions rather than its people.
At home, the resistance wears a judicial robe. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has issued a fourteen-day stay halting construction of the President’s Triumphal Arch in Washington, D.C., despite an 8-4 approval from the National Capital Planning Commission.
The monument, inscribed with “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice for All,” is meant to honor veterans and mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, yet critics have reportedly threatened to physically obstruct construction crews. This is lawfare intended to stall a duly approved project that celebrates American sovereignty.
Liberty, sovereignty, law and order, and accountable government stand or fall together. A chief of staff who answers to the elected President rather than to career bureaucrats is essential to breaking the cycle of leaks, injunctions, and sabotage. The Indonesian scandal shows what happens when state power is weaponized against the head of state; the arch injunction shows what happens when unelected judges override the people’s representatives. Miller’s appointment is the corrective.
The White House should not retreat in the face of predictable outrage from Democrats and establishment Republicans. It should move forward with the arch, enforce immigration law, and let Miller run the West Wing like the battlefield it is. The American people did not vote for compromise with the permanent bureaucracy; they voted for a government that defends the republic.
