The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has intensified with a wave of deadly strikes, even as both sides floated unilateral ceasefire proposals ahead of Russia's Victory Day commemorations. Russian aerial assaults across Ukraine resulted in the deaths of over 20 civilians, including 12 in Zaporizhzhia, five in Kramatorsk, and four in Dnipro.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the Russian actions as cynical, while Ukraine responded with its own long-range strikes. Ukrainian forces utilized domestically-produced Flamingo cruise missiles to target a military component factory in Cheboksary, located 1,500km from the front line, and hit industrial sites in the Leningrad region.
Russian authorities reported two deaths and dozens of injuries in the Chuvash Republic following these attacks. Moscow, clearly rattled by the reach of Ukrainian strikes, has opted to scale back its annual Red Square military parade, citing security concerns.
While Kyiv has declared an open-ended ceasefire beginning May 6, and Moscow has announced a pause for May 8 and 9, these are unilateral gestures rather than a negotiated peace.
The Kremlin has threatened massive retaliation should its own truce be violated, underscoring the fragility of the situation as both nations continue to prioritize military objectives over diplomatic resolution.
