The Zambian government has moved to restore order by charging opposition leader Brian Mundubile and 17 of his associates, including running mate Makebi Zulu, with treason. The arrests follow a decisive security operation in Lusaka where authorities raided a property linked to the NRPUP party and seized a cache of weapons.
The government maintains that the group was actively planning an armed insurgency to undermine the state.
The raid, which resulted in the death of a former cabinet minister, occurred after Mundubile refused to accept the results of the August 13 presidential election, in which incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema secured a commanding 60% of the vote compared to Mundubile’s 38%.
Following the raid, Mundubile and Zulu attempted to evade justice by hiding in a United Nations facility in the capital. They were eventually detained after the government successfully pressured the UN to turn them over to local authorities.
While opposition figures claim the legal system is being used against them, the administration is moving forward with the charges as the country prepares for President Hichilema’s second-term inauguration on September 1.
Mundubile’s legal team claims he is prepared to face the charges in court, where the evidence regarding the alleged insurgency will be put to the test.
