Spain is grappling with the aftermath of a horrific rail disaster that occurred Wednesday morning near Urda, resulting in the deaths of 69 individuals and leaving more than 100 others injured. The collision involved a high-speed Renfe train striking a stationary Iryo train on the same track, an impact severe enough to cause multiple carriages to derail.
Authorities are currently working to identify victims at the forensics institute in Toledo, as the death toll remains a point of concern for emergency responders. Among the deceased is Fátima Báñez, 59, a former employment minister who served under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy from 2011 to 2018.
Báñez, who later chaired the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations, was a significant political figure known for implementing labor reforms during her tenure.
The tragedy also claimed the life of 24-year-old athlete Julieta Gallego, a long jumper for the Madrid athletics club AD Sprint, as well as 31-year-old Civil Guard officer José Manuel Chacón and tax inspector Antonio Montero Domínguez.
This incident stands as the deadliest rail disaster in Spain since 2013 and the second such catastrophe to strike the nation this year, raising urgent questions regarding the safety and management of the country's rail infrastructure.
