The battle against a massive wildfire in the Fontainebleau forest, located south of Paris, has entered its second day as French authorities move to hold those responsible for the destruction accountable.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez revealed that investigators identified approximately 10 separate fire ignition points within a 1,000-meter perimeter, strongly suggesting the blaze was set deliberately.
In response to the catastrophe, which has scorched 800 hectares and forced the closure of a major highway, French law enforcement has arrested two individuals in connection with the Fontainebleau fire. These arrests are part of a broader crackdown, with 59 individuals detained across France for suspected arson.
The scale of the fire has been described by officials as 'virulent' and 'exceptional,' requiring the deployment of firefighting aircraft from the southern regions of the country to assist local crews.
While the region is currently enduring its third heatwave of the year, the evidence of multiple ignition points shifts the focus from environmental conditions to criminal activity.
The fire has caused significant infrastructure disruption, including lengthy delays on high-speed rail lines and the temporary shutdown of nuclear power stations due to cooling water regulations. As firefighters continue their efforts to protect lives and property, the government remains focused on identifying those who chose to put the public in harm's way.
