In a bold move that signals internal friction within the Ukrainian leadership, former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov has publicly called for the resumption of elections despite the country remaining under martial law. Since the Russian invasion began in 2022, Ukraine has suspended its electoral process to focus on national survival.
Fedorov, however, is now insisting that the democratic process must continue, declaring that 'democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia.' While Fedorov’s rhetoric appeals to the principles of governance, he has failed to provide any concrete plan on how to conduct free and fair elections in a country currently being decimated by war.
Furthermore, he has remained tight-lipped regarding his own political ambitions and whether he intends to mount a direct challenge to President Zelensky.
As the nation fights for its sovereignty, this push for an electoral overhaul raises serious questions about stability and the practical ability to maintain a functional government while the front lines remain active.
