Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates was forced to answer for his past association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a closed-door hearing before the House Oversight Committee this Wednesday.

Gates, who has long faced questions regarding his proximity to the disgraced financier, told lawmakers that he had no knowledge of Epstein’s illicit activities. During his opening statement, Gates characterized his past meetings with Epstein as a lapse in judgment, claiming he was merely one of many who now regret ever having known him.

Furthermore, Gates alleged that Epstein attempted to leverage information regarding his personal life in an effort to pressure him. As the House Oversight Committee continues its inquiry, the testimony highlights the lingering consequences of associating with those who operate outside the bounds of the law.
