The Indonesian government is reeling from a massive security breach as authorities investigate allegations of treason involving the wiretapping of President Prabowo Subianto.
Chief of Staff Listyo Sigit Prabowo, along with two senior police officers, was arrested this week for allegedly abusing the national electronic surveillance system to intercept the President’s phone calls without legal authorization.
Officials state the illicit operation, which reportedly began in 2025 during Listyo's tenure as national police chief, also targeted journalists, politicians, and business leaders. The gravity of the situation cannot be overstated; under Indonesian law, treason carries the potential for life imprisonment or the death penalty.
The scandal has laid bare a widening fracture between President Prabowo and his predecessor, Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi. Listyo, a long-time ally of the former president, was promptly dismissed from his post following the arrest. While law enforcement officials insist the probe is a standard legal matter, the political implications are clear.
The administration is currently navigating a period of intense instability, marked by economic uncertainty, market manipulation allegations, and public unrest over failing government programs.
As the nation grapples with these crises, the arrest of high-ranking officials underscores a dangerous breakdown in governance, leaving many to wonder if the country’s leadership is prioritizing internal power struggles over the needs of the Indonesian people.
