After nearly 30 years of legal maneuvering, the U.S. Supreme Court has rightfully denied Christa Pike’s last-ditch effort to avoid her date with justice. Pike, now 50, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.
The crime was nothing short of depraved; Pike and her then-boyfriend lured Slemmer to a job training camp, where they beat and tortured her to death. Witnesses testified that Pike bragged about the killing and even displayed a piece of the victim's skull as a trophy.
Despite the gruesome nature of the crime, defense attorneys attempted to use the tired 'youthful brain' argument to excuse her actions. Governor Bill Lee correctly refused to grant clemency, allowing the legal process to reach its necessary conclusion.
This execution marks the first time a woman will be put to death in Tennessee in over two centuries, serving as a grim reminder that heinous crimes against innocent life demand the ultimate accountability.
