U.S. Military Neutralizes Sanctions-Busting Vessel in Gulf of Oman

American forces fired Hellfire missiles to disable a cargo ship attempting to violate the blockade on Iranian ports.

The U.S. military is once again demonstrating that American sanctions are not mere suggestions. On Tuesday, a U.S. Central Command MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles directly into the engine room of the Panama-flagged M/V Vela Nova, effectively neutralizing the vessel as it attempted to breach the blockade of Iranian ports.

Centcom confirmed the action was taken only after the ship's crew brazenly ignored repeated warnings from American forces. The vessel is no longer moving toward Iran, marking another successful enforcement action in a region where Tehran continues to threaten global energy security.

This operation is part of a broader, necessary effort to maintain the blockade, which has seen Centcom redirect 55 commercial vessels, disable three non-compliant ships, and board two others since August 11.

While the Iranian regime continues its destabilizing behavior—including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing hostilities against Israel and U.S. allies—the U.S. military remains committed to enforcing the blockade in full.

Meanwhile, the cost of Iranian aggression continues to mount, as evidenced by the recent Houthi strike on a cargo ship in the Red Sea that resulted in multiple casualties. The message from the U.S. is clear: those who attempt to bypass the blockade will face the consequences of their defiance.
