The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into Corey Lewandowski, a former top aide to then-DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, regarding allegations that he improperly leveraged his position for financial benefit.
The probe, which follows a referral from the DHS inspector general, focuses on whether Lewandowski exerted unauthorized influence over agency contracts and grants, including those managed by FEMA. As a special government employee, Lewandowski was subject to strict legal limitations on his authority and scope of work.
Reports suggest he allegedly bypassed these restrictions to approve contracts and stall others. Furthermore, allegations have surfaced that he sought to monetize his government connections by soliciting private consulting work from Middle Eastern nations regarding visa issues.
Lewandowski’s attorney, Adam Trigg, has denied any wrongdoing, stating that his client has not been contacted by the DOJ. President Trump addressed the matter on Thursday, emphasizing that he expects honesty from his staff and supports the prosecution of any individuals who violate that standard.
This investigation follows a period of significant turmoil at the agency, which saw both Lewandowski and Noem depart earlier this year amid broader controversies.
