Thomas Weir Pauken II, a 50-year-old American journalist who spent over a decade embedded in China, has finally been brought to justice for his role as an illegal agent for the People's Republic of China. Pauken admitted in a Virginia court to conspiring to obtain sensitive U.S. government information at the behest of his Chinese handlers.
Between 2019 and early 2024, Pauken operated under the direction of Chinese intelligence operatives, receiving at least $100,000 to betray his country. His activities included traveling to the U.S. to scout potential intelligence assets and gathering information on American targets to feed back to the Chinese Communist Party.
FBI officials noted that Pauken even facilitated requests for cyber espionage experts and sold sensitive Department of Justice data to his handlers. While Pauken’s legal counsel attempted to frame his espionage as an effort to 'promote peaceful relations,' the facts show a clear case of an American citizen compromising national security for foreign cash.
Pauken faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced this September, a necessary consequence for those who choose to undermine American sovereignty to serve the interests of a hostile regime.
