Ukraine Strikes St. Petersburg as Putin Hosts Economic Forum

Ukrainian long-range drones targeted oil facilities and a naval base just as Russia’s flagship investment event kicks off.

Smoke billowing over central St Petersburg

Ukraine successfully executed a long-range drone strike on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, sending plumes of black smoke over the city just hours before the opening of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum.

The strikes targeted oil storage facilities and the Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet outpost in Kronstadt, forcing the temporary closure of Pulkovo Airport and disrupting mobile internet services.

While Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov threatened a 'systemic' response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the operation, framing the long-distance strikes as a necessary strategy to pressure Russia. Ukrainian military figures claimed the corvette Boikiy was hit during the assault on the naval base.

The forum, once a premier venue for Western investment, has seen its prestige diminish since the 2022 invasion, though it continues to host a eclectic mix of international attendees.

As Ukraine continues to expand its domestic defense capabilities to target the energy infrastructure fueling the Russian war machine, Moscow persists in its own campaign of missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian cities, which recently resulted in at least 22 civilian deaths.
